On the Mental System
As Xun Guan began to write her report, a
question arose in her mind:
"To whom am I writing this
report?" she wondered. "To the people, to the future, to the
truth," she answered herself. "But if those of the future cannot find
my records, how will they ever know if I discovered the true equations of the
mental system?"
"Actually," she admitted, "I
haven't found the correct overview graph of our mental system. What I do know
are some methods for testing what is true and what is false."
"We have to keep exploring; we need to
know the truth," she declared. "Even though we can test the
properties of everything that is happening right now, we still have much to
learn about the workings of the mind."
"Xun Guan took a deep breath of the fresh air, invigorated by the fragrance of her self-brewed orange tea. Her pet, a white puppy, slumbered peacefully beside her wooden bed.
Since 360 BC, ancient Chinese philosophers have pondered the nature of our mental system. Zhuang Zhou, a renowned philosopher, proposed a thought-provoking metaphor involving a butterfly and himself to explore the relationship between reality and dreams.
For centuries, philosophers and scholars have grappled with the question of whether we inhabit the natural world or exist within someone's mental universe. Our behavior undoubtedly reflects our emotions, but does this imply that our minds and souls entirely define our individuality, rendering the body we inhabit insignificant?
Seeking an everlasting spirit, the immortal institutes advocate for transcending the physical body's limitations. They instruct their followers that longevity can be achieved through three destined trials: physical collapse, a lightning strike, and self-loathing.
Zhang Liang, a celebrated politician and military strategist during the Han Dynasty, is the first documented individual to attain this elusive state. His ingenuity and contributions to the Han Dynasty were rewarded with eternal life.
However, the veracity of these accounts remains uncertain. All we possess are tales recounted in Taoist texts or fantastical novels.
These theories of immortality lack concrete evidence to support their claims.
Then, what is the true purpose of our pursuit through the study of magic power?
"Wow," the little dog opened its eyes, letting out a startled yelp, as if transformed into a wolf.
This reminded Xun Guan of an intriguing conversation during a game hosted by the 5-unions.
"Have you read the bestselling novel 《哨兵》?"
"I've read parts of it. The concept of heightened sensibility and tangible spiritual animals is quite captivating."
"Me, too. We magic talents possess a stronger sensibility than ordinary people, and I often feel mentally exhausted."
"You can use 七叶一枝花 to aid your mental well-being. It's very effective," suggested 冷冽 from一剑谷.
"Indeed. Our supervisors are willing to share the plant with you. You can apply to her," added 沈濯, another representative.
"I use 天天天兰 to manage my mental energy," revealed 花弦, a senior pharmacist from刀笔堂. "It's quite helpful."
"So, you all believe that plants can help regulate our mental systems?" Xun Guan inquired.
"Not just any plant, but specifically those carefully cultivated by supernatural technicians."
"That's too restrictive. I want a spiritual beast that can autonomously collect my mental energy and help me eliminate redundant information," Xun Guan expressed.
"Me too."
"Have you envisioned your spirit beast? What form will it take? Mine would be a musk-scented cat."
"A helicopter. No, a nest of ferocious ants."
"You're quite aggressive. Mine would be a sloth, even lazier than I am."
"What about you?"
"A silver dire wolf."
Xun Guan lacked an exclusive tangible spiritual beast or a dire wolf companion. She only had this half-bred Teddy.
"But I can still call him a silver dire wolf. That's his name."
"He is my exclusive tangible spiritual beast, even though he can now communicate with me."
"Perhaps we conversed in the spiritual realm, in my dreams, before I even realized it."
If my conjectures about the mental system are accurate, there will be a neural network of humankind. I can document my experiences in this mental realm."
"One day, others entering this metaverse will learn my story and assist me in continuing my research."
"If only I made the correct guess and all my conjectures can be tested."
"To achieve this, I must remain dedicated to my research and avoid using fabricated or unverified data."
"When I remain committed to the truth, I will uncover more about it."
